OUR STORY

The OV Sea Hags are a community-based amateur dance troupe founded in Norfolk, Virginia. They are the first and only group in Coastal Virginia officially recognized as an affiliate of the original Wolfshäger Hexenbrut in Germany.

Comprised of women of all ages and backgrounds, the OV Sea Hags share a mission to spread joy, laughter, and connection through creative expression, performance, and community spirit.

What began as a small neighborhood gathering is growing into a joyful sisterhood—using dance, music, and a touch of whimsy to uplift spirits across Hampton Roads.

But the OV Sea Hags are more than a dance troupe—they’re a movement. As they continue to grow, the Hags plan to bring their energy and performances year-round to local nonprofits, fundraisers, and community events, using their unique brand of playful magic to raise both spirits and funds for good causes throughout the region.

About the Original Wolfshäger Hexenbrut

The Wolfshäger Hexenbrut (“Witches of Wolfshagen”) originated in the Harz Mountains of Germany, a region steeped in folklore and ancient Walpurgis Night traditions. In 2014, a small group of local women created a joyful “witches’ broom dance” to celebrate community and self-expression. The performance went viral after a video of their dance—set to Schüttel deinen Speck (“Shake Your Bacon”)—captivated millions worldwide.

What began as a lighthearted local performance has since grown into a global sisterhood, inspiring hundreds of affiliated witch-dance troupes around the world, all united by laughter, empowerment, and the shared magic of movement and spreading joy.

Cheryl

OV Sea Hags Founder & Crone | Broom Council

Cheryl is the founding force behind the OV Sea Hags and a lifelong creative rooted deeply in Ocean View.
What excites her most about the OV Sea Hags is creating a space where women feel free to move and laugh together, while engaging with the community to cast joy like sea spray.

By day, Cheryl is a longtime local entrepreneur known for designing holistic products rooted in natural materials and well-being. She is also Reiki Level II certified, and that intuitive approach carries through everything she builds – whether a product, an idea, or a gathering of people. Her movement journey includes yoga since her teens, aerobic instructor in her 20s, belly dance in her 30s, 5Rhythms in her 40s, Zumba in her 50s, and now the witch dance in her 60s, shaping how she views movement as expression rather than performance.

Cheryl’s vision was to bring together a troupe of women who dance not to perform perfectly, but to feel aligned to themselves, to each other, and to the wider community. Through joyful performances, she believes dance is a universal language that sparks laughter and connection.

On the Broom Council, Cheryl serves as both visionary and wrangler—keeping the magic intentional, the chaos productive, and the heart of the group firmly rooted in fun and purpose.
